Ian Delemarre, who gave up two runs in one and a third innings, was the winning pitcher for the Netherlands. Gijs Van Els, the starter, gave up two runs in five and a two-thirds innings.
Mike Campbell, who pitched five and two-thirds innings for Canada picked up the loss. Dave Stubbard came to get the final out in the sixth inning.
The Netherlands took an early lead when Rosseni Frolijk doubled in the bottom of the first, then came home on a single by Jillian Cijntje.
The Netherlands increase their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Max Ploegstra reached on an error, hen moved to second on a single by Peter Doesburg. Poloegstra then reached third on a wild pitch, then scored on a ground out by Jesse Assums.
Canada tied the score in the bottom of the sixth. Cal McNeil, then Jeff Cohn hit a two-run homer.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Netherlands answered with three more runs. Jillian Cijntje singled, then moved to second on a single by Patrick Bok. Milan Post then reached base on an error, loading the bases. Max Ploegstra then doubled, driving Bok and Cijntje home. Post was thrown out at home plate. Ploegstra later scored on a single by Peter Doesburg.
With its backs up against the wall, Canada did not give up. Derek MacDonald reached base by an error, then R.J. Barrett hit a two-run homer that cut the Netherlands’ lead to 5-4. But Canada was not able to field another baserunner, giving the Netherlands the win.
Canada, 0-2, plays Puerto Rico 9 a.m. Saturday. The Netherlands, face Guam at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
