JARKARTA, Indonesia — As their homeland was being pelted with the rain and devastation from the first typhoon of the season, members of the Philippines Big League Baseball team flooded their opponents with runs en route to earning a spot in the 2010 Big League World Series.

The Philippines defeated Guam 13-10 Thursday to win the Asia-Pacific Regional. The team joins the host team, Puerto Rico and Panama on the Big League World Series roster.

The series begins July 28 at the J.B. “Red” Owens Recreation Complex.

The Philippines team was 4-0 in the tournament, opening with a 13-4 win over Indonesia. The Philippines then defeated CNMI 6-5.

Both Guam and the Philippines came into the final day of pool play with 2-0 records, meaning each had clinched a spot in the championship game. In a meaningless final game of pool play, the Philippines defeated Guam 13-9 Wednesday.

In Ramstein, Germany, the Netherlands and Germany were set to play for the Europe-Mediterranean-Africa Regional Thursday afternoon. Results of that game were not available at press time.

The Netherlands came into the game as the higher seed, having defeated Moldovia 15-0 and German 12-1 in pool play. Germany topped Moldovia 8-7 to earn a second shot at the Netherlands.

Two more regional tournaments begin Friday. In Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the U.S. Southeast Regional begins with West Virginia playing Tennessee, followed by South Carolina playing the host team, Florida District 21.

In Rushton, La., the U.S. Southwest Regional begins with the host team facing Texas West, followed by Colorado facing Texas East.

The U.S. West Regional begins Saturday in Bremerton, Wash.

The U.S. East Regional begins Sunday in Dover, Delaware.

The U.S. Central Regional begins Monday in Wyoming, Mich.

The Canadian Regonial tournament begins Thursday in Regina, Saskatchewan.
