EASLEY — When Colt Shope played quarterback for Easley High School, he was known for his toughness and tenacity.

Starting his high school career as an undersized freshman, Shope was knocked around by some of the Green Wave’s tough opponents, including Greenwood, Westside and Hanna. Still, no matter how hard the hit, Shope would brush himself off and return to the huddle to call the next play.

Shope has carried that same attitude with him after graduating from Easley. Recently, Shope’s tenacity helped him pull together a group of more than 40 former Easley High School players for a special Green Wave Alumni game set for July 31 at Brice Field. The game is a fundraiser for the Easley High School Athletic Department.

“Colt has been so good putting this thing together,” said Bobby Humphrey, one of the players returning. “He just makes you want to follow him.”

Other former players on the roster include Michael Partridge, who has worked with the athletic department as an assistant coach, and Chuck King — now known as “Dr. Chuck King.”

“We’ve gone our separate ways, followed different careers,” said Humphrey. “But the one thing that keeps us all together is our love for Easley High School. The athletic deparment always could use extra money, but with the school budget cuts, the need is even greater.”

Coaching the Easley Alumni team will be Burt Owens, longtime Easley High School assistant coach.

“We all love Coach Owens, so it should be a kick having him on the sidelines with us,” Humphries said.

The opponents across the field should look familiar — an team made up of Wren High School Alumni.

“It’s only appropriate that we play Wren,” Humphries said. “A lot of the guys on their teams lived just down the road, and were our friends until we met up on the football field. Then, after the game, we’d be friends again.”

I played in the game last night to help the Greenwave try to raise some money at first that was really the only reason but when we hit the field my love for the game and the green and white was still there after 17 years I dont know if they will ever do this again but if they do I would highly recommend anyone to do it maybe not for the whole game like did but because I am so sore I cant move but at least for one play one last time. God Bless

Easley High Football deserves all the support it can get. Our Greenwave should be a program that competes for playoff births and state titles. It's time to get Easley back to where it was in the past.

If this thing go's good, maybe next year you guys could have another game with a school in your county,as you guys no pickens county has always been on the bottom of the states list of funding, just a suggestion, will the teams be wearing there green and gold outfits? The guys spearheading this should be singled out an commended, its sad when our local so called big shots will not step up to the plate! What about places like toyota of Easley, mckeeny dodge, hendrick honda our other company's match your earnings on the game?A couple of thousand dollars from these huge dealerships wouldnt hurt, hell our tax dollars can bell them out but cant help our highschool kids?thanks Jim Adams

hold up,you guys are talking flag football right?Who in there right mind would agree to let this happen? There is a age limit correct? This sounds real flaky to say the least! Why not you older guys have a bake sell!a car wash!or is it that you Easley guys think you got something to prove after being a laughing stock in your area over the last two decades! The last time I checked no 4A school has ever put mighty Liberty on there sched!!!except Jabo, win more games and the money will come in,the last time I was at a game there were asst. coaches for Easley that I would not hire to coach my sons 10 and under teams!!!but anyway good luck in the game,"i guess"

This is great for the former players to all come together to help the school!I remember watching the greenwave in the 60's and the 70's and they were a beast.Burt Owens coached my son in jr. high and then into varsity,he's away in the marines or he would be out there trust me!GREAT JOB BOBBY,MIKE,COLT AND AS YOU GUYS SAY "DR.KING".As a former greenwave I challange all of the former players, parents, and people new in the Easley area to come out and help these young men out.
