EASLEY – The Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) of Easley High School placed first in the Area Six Orienteering Championships on Dec. 15.
“Orienteering is land navigation reading a map, a compass, and terrain, putting an emphasis on getting from point A to point B in a reasonable amount of time for competition,” said Chief Mark Stauder.
The event was held at Mistletoe State Park in Appling, Ga.
“Mistletoe State Park is full of dry ditches that are about six feet deep, so you are steady trying to run a flat course but you have to go down ditches and back up the hill on the other side to get to the next location,” Stauder said. “Some of the control points are hidden in those ditches that you have to find.”
Easley’s team consisted of Joey Sigler, Savannah Kalasinski, Anthony Worthen, Thomas Jones, Tyler Burton, Maricela Romero, Natanael Lopez, Hunter Dodd, Luke Ross, Leland Warner, Justin Hall and Colin Harrison.
The team took first place out of the 16 schools that competed.
“I am real proud of the team taking first place at this Area Six competition,” Stauder said “They were up against some big competition with the schools that they were running against and this is going to boost them up to the next level which is the national level. Four of these cadets have never run a competitive course with the exception of two weeks ago and the event at Crowders Mountain which prepared them to be competitive at Mistletoe State Park.”
The Easley orienteering team of the NJROTC took third in a competition at Crowders Mountain on Dec. 1. It was first established in 1993.
