Choosing Sides

With the Presidential campaigns in full gallop, and as the candidates exchange snide comments and approved messages, Americans are once again choosing political sides.

But is it actual politics that determines the vote, or is it the perceived ideology that the voter believes his or her candidate embodies?

In fact, does anyone vote on policy beyond that of the supposed personal politics of the candidate?

And if not, should personal politics influence Presidential duties or the duties of the American people?

I do not own a gun, and I do not shoot for sport. In fact, I disagree with it as an activity, and yet, I would defend an American’s right to own a gun.

The United States of America is a free society, and true freedom will no doubt unleash certain activities that can spur the wrath of others, but to be a true American and a follower of freedom you must not impede that right, you must celebrate it, even if it means protecting the liberties of someone whose activities enrage you.

And when the election is closed and a new leader, or the old one, assumes the office of President, will the voting public cast aside their personal politics in favor of the actual product and how it may better their lives?

As an American citizen, I can only hope that my fellow countrymen and the residents of Pickens County will soldier on regardless of the outcome.

And they will.

The Sidewalks of Main Street will fill again and the people will pass from one store to the next, make no mention of politics, and get on with the business of living.

And if we should begin to acknowledge our liberties rather than hinder them and endorse those who might do so as well, perhaps we can all become better citizens with an improved understanding of what it means to be an American.
