PICKENS — Customers of Duke Energy in the city of Pickens can take advantage of a free program to improve their energy efficiency and reduce their monthly costs as their Neighborhood Energy Saver Program is now in full swing.

The program, begun in 2013, is designed to help Duke Energy customers increase their energy usage and put more dollars back in their pocket, but best of all, there is no cost to the homeowner, according to Sue Dinnsen, program manager for Duke Energy.

“This service is completely free for Duke customers and doesn’t take more than 45 minutes to an hour for our representatives to complete the check,” Dinnsen said. “Everything from wrapping the water heater, to caulking windows and doors, to water conservation are all covered. And that’s just a small part of what the technicians check. Technicians come in, do the service and leave, leaving a year’s supply of furnace filters as well.”

The program is done in neighborhood specific areas to concentrate the effort and produce a greater number of participants. A kickoff meeting was held in Pickens on Jan. 7 in Pickens with Mayor David Owens and 77 residents in attendance. Dinnsen presented what the service entails, reinforcing the no cost portion of the presentation to residents, and taking questions.

Dinnsen stressed there was no cost to customers for the service, citing the need to be more energy conscious and the resulting savings as well.

“For a lot of folks it’s hard to believe something like this is done with no charge, including actual work instead of suggestions, but today that isn’t surprising because there isn’t much that is free,” Dinnsen said. “But for those inside the designated areas this is a service they will want to take advantage of in order to save money.”

After consulting the coverage area being serviced in the program, those who are eligible are invited to contact Duke Energy to take advantage of the Neighborhood Energy Saver Program.
