Pickens County students took home top honors in the 2013 Glider Challenge on April 25.
The R.C. Edwards Middle School team, “The UFOs,” won first place in the 2013 Glider Challenge,
and the “Chicken Strips” team from the J.T. Simpson Alternative Center came in second place.
“The UFOs” team members were Clary Miles, Robert Weir, Khalil Anderson and John Robert
Ayers. The “Chicken Strips” team members were Chase Simmons and Austin Elrod.
More than 60 8th grade students from Anderson and Pickens Counties competed in the STEM
(science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning event at Lockheed Martin at the
South Carolina Technology and Aviation Center.
In the Glider Challenge, students explore the relationship between force and motion and the effects
of weight and lift on the glider. Most importantly, they learn how to work in small teams to solve a
problem and accomplish a goal. Teams competed in several categories, including Distance, Target
(Accuracy), and Artistic Design.
