Youth bowling league opens Saturday

Youth ages 5-21 get the chance to join a bowling league based at the Tri-City Bowling Lanes in Easley Saturday.

Approximately 30 youth are expected to participate in Tri-City Youth League play that begins with a business meeting at 10:30 a.m., said one of the leagues youth leaders, Susanne Carver. She is also assistant manager of Tri-City Bowling Lanes on Calhoun memorial Highway next to Farmer’s Furniture.

Bowling begins at 11 a.m. and last for three games. Teams will be organized in the business meeting.

Players are assigned according to age group. There will be boys and girls teams in the 11 and under age group and 12 and up, Carver said.

Games are played each Saturday at 11 a.m. Saturday through April. Following play, coaches will be on hand to assist with training. There are seven coaches on hand to assist players. The coaching job is all volunteer and the coaches are certified by the league’s sanctioning organization, the United State Bowling Congress. All coaches go trough a background check, Carver said.

“We want parents to know that this is a place where they can leave their children safely, where they can have fun and get good exercise,” Carver said.

“It is a good activity. We want to offer some way for them to stay off the street and give them little treats to encourage them play better,” said Linda Wallace, one of the coaches.

She said her teenaged daughter enjoys the activity and social benefits of the play.

The program in the past has produced several first and second statewide winners. The organization typically helps players participate in a State competition and a Pepsi sponsored statewide competition.

Cost of the regular season play is a $17 dollar one-time sanctioning fee and $7 per week for play.
