SWU announces spring fine arts calendar

Jan. 18, 7 p.m. | Upper Region High School Honor Choir Concert

After rehearsing Thursday evening and all day Friday with Dr. Don R. Campbell, SWU’s director of choral activities, the South Carolina Upper Region Honor Choir will present a Friday evening program highlighting the great work they have achieved. For more than 200 students, it is the culmination of not only these two days, but also the preparation that has taken place in their own high schools by their choral instructors. Campbell has been honored to be the guest conductor of this choir for the past 11 years. Prof. Jane Dill is the accompanist for the choir. The concert will be held at the Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center. Admission is free. For details, call (864) 644-5408.

Feb. 1, 7:30 p.m. | “Back by Request”- SWU Music Alumni Concert

7:30 p.m. Adults, $5; Children under 12, students with ID, SWU students- FREE.

Three Southern Wesleyan University music graduates return to the campus in Central and join Dr. Melanie Rowell, professor of music, for an evening of beautiful music in a benefit concert for the Fine Arts Scholarship Fund. Performing will be Dr. Jonathan Crutchfield, organ; Jac Mandel, guitar; Amber James, soprano; and Dr. Melanie Rowell, soprano. These performers combine their talent to bring a variety of musical selections sure to delight the listener. The concert will be held in the Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center. Feb. 12, 7:30 p.m. | The Tarradiddle Players present: “The True Story of the 3 Pigs”

Adults, $5; Children under 12, students with ID, SWU students- FREE.

Returning for their 2013 performance, actors from the Charlotte Children’s Theatre will present a unique approach to the familiar story of The Three Little Pigs – the title has been tweaked, but the facts remain the same. Children of all ages will enjoy this Tuesday evening presentation in the Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the Southern Wesleyan University campus in Central. Feb. 21, 6:30 p.m. | SWU Jazz Invitational

The Southern Wesleyan University Jazz Invitational will feature many of the Upstate’s finest middle school, high school and collegiate jazz bands on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m. The program will conclude with SWU’s own jazz band. Feb. 28, 7:30 p.m. | SWU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble

Under the direction of Prof. Greg Day, director of instrumental activities, Southern Wesleyan University’s Wind Ensemble will join the SWU Jazz Ensemble in a varied program of concert and sacred works that will delight listeners of all ages on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. The event features students from Southern Wesleyan University as well as area students who have auditioned to be part of the group. March 15-16, 7:30 p.m.; March 22, 7 p.m.; March 23, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. | “Jesus Christ Superstar”

This year’s student production, “Jesus Christ Superstar,” will feature a reverent staging of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical interpretation of the events of Holy Week. Join the cast and crew in a powerful experience of the final week of Christ’s life in music and song, and encounter the Gospel as presented in a fresh, respectful way including Christ’s resurrection. April 5, 4:30 p.m. | Music Majors Formal Recital

Southern Wesleyan University music majors are featured in the Music Majors Formal Recital on Friday afternoon, April 5, at 4:30 p.m. This end-of-the-semester presentation will showcase the achievements of the music majors. April 11, 7:30 p.m. | Music Majors Honors Recital

April 21, 3 p.m. | Masterworks Concert, “Partners in Time-Haydn and Mozart”

Spend a Sunday afternoon with the classics. This concert will feature selections from two great classical composers. Professor Jane Dill will perform W.A. Mozart’s Piano Concerto in C Major, K.467 on the beautiful Steinway concert grand piano, and the SWU Concert Choir and Orchestra performing F.J. Haydn’s great Harmony Mass under the direction of Dr. Don R. Campbell. This concert will be held in the Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the university’s campus in Central. April 30, 7:30 p.m. | SWU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble

The Jazz and Wind ensembles join forces at the end of the semester to delight the audience with a wide variety of sacred and secular works.
