CLEMSON — Clemson University will be participate in the National GameDay Recycling Challenge on Saturday at the Florida State football game.

Recycling bins and recycling bags will be placed in several locations to encourage fans to recycle, and students will distribute bags before kickoff.

Bags and bins will be collected after the game. A sorting team will recover plastic and glass bottles, as well as aluminum cans, paper, cardboard and food scraps that otherwise would have been sent to a landfill.

“The GameDay Recycling Challenge gives us an opportunity to relate to our fans that we are a sustainable university,” said Dave VanDeventer, Clemson’s recycling and custodial services manager. “We have one of the top university recycling programs, and this is a great way for students, fans and alumni to get involved.”

Last year, Clemson placed first in GameDay challenge “Total Recycling” category by collecting more than 60,000 pounds of recyclable materials during the game against the University of South Carolina. This year, attendees are encouraged to recycle more to beat last year’s total.

To participate in the challenge, schools must measure waste in either their stadium or tailgate/parking areas or both. The results of the competition will be announced Dec. 14.

The competition is managed by the College and University Recycling Coalition, the Environmental Protection Agency’s WasteWise program, Keep America Beautiful and RecycleMania Inc. and is open to any college or university with a football program. There are 98 schools competing in the 2015 challenge.
