CENTRAL – The Southern Wesleyan men’s basketball team’s season came to a close on Friday night, falling 95-82 to Carver College in the NCCAA South Region Men’s Basketball Championship.


The Cougars advance to the NCCAA National Tournament in Indiana next week.


Carver used a 16-4 run midway through the first half to take the lead at 31-20 and only trailed briefly at 66-65 in the second half. The Warriors came back to tie the game twice in the second half but a 6-0 run by Carver with eight minutes left put them back in charge for good.


Kenny Holmes poured in 31 points including 17 in the first half and Terrance Hutchins added 20 off the bench in his final game as a Warrior. The Warriors shot just 44 percent overall. Cameron Solomon struggled to 10 points on 4 of 20 shooting from the floor. Holmes made 7 of 13 from beyond the arc and 10 of 19 overall.


Carver was led by Derek Douglas’ game-high 33 points on 10 of 19 shooting. The Cougars used 18 SWU turnovers to lead to 24 fast break points and 23 points off of turnovers. Carver scored 56 points in the paint including 25 second chance points off of 15 offensive rebounds. The Warriors managed to out-rebound the Cougars 50-41 as Mike Lieberman grabbed 11 off the bench.


The Warriors season ends with a 17-15 record. Carver advances to the NCCAA National Tournament in Indiana that begins Wednesday.
