MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Southern States Athletic Conference doled out awards at the annual awards banquet on Wednesday night with Cayse Branyon from Southern Wesleyan taking home some hardware.
Branyon, a freshman from Rock Hill, was named to the All-Freshman team after starting all 28 games on the season. The guard averaged 10.4 points per game, which was third on the team, and shot 35 percent from beyond the arc to lead the Warriors. Her 37 made three-pointers was second on the team. She also pulled down 3.8 rebounds per game and shot 43 percent overall from the floor.
The Warriors just missed the SSAC Tournament after an 8-12 mark in league play. That put the Warriors one game out of the fifth and final spot from the East division. SWU finished the regular season at 12-16 and will compete in the NCCAA South Region Tournament next week hosted by Emmanuel. The Warriors are the two seed in that tournament and will battle Southeastern (Fla.) in the semifinals at 7 p.m. March 14.
