ANDERSON – Liberty High School’s grapplers had a great showing this past weekend at the S.C. High School League individual wrestling championships held at the Anderson Civic Center, walking away with several individual titles and the state Individual Tournament Team championship.
Liberty High School had six wrestlers qualify for the state individual tournament and all six placed:
Darien Painter was named the individual State Champion in the 152 pounds class after pinning all three of his opponents.
Tanner Chambers grabbed the individual State Champion title in the 182 pound class after winning all three of his matches, which included one pin.
Matt Frey was the state runner-up in the 113-pound class after going 2-1 in the tournament. He had one pin.
After losing in the first round Friday night, three wrestlers came back Saturday to win two matches and wrestle in the semi-finals:
Tristan Oglesby won three matches on Saturday, two of them in overtime, to finish in third place at 120 pounds.
Jimmy Knott won three matches - all with pins - on Saturday to finish third at 160 pounds and Garrett Whitmire went 2-1 to finish fourth at 138 pounds. One of his wins was by pin.
