WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Jeff Duncan issued the following statement in response to the President’s State of the Union address:
“It’s disappointing that President Obama would give a campaign speech that divides the country rather than focus on issues that can bring both parties together in America’s best interest,” Duncan said. “I found the President’s insistence on bypassing Congress and implementing his agenda through executive orders to be particularly disturbing.
“Our Founding Fathers could have given us a King, but instead created the Presidency, the Congress, and the courts. When a President decides to bypass Congress, he sends our country down a very dangerous path and makes compromise and bipartisanship even more difficult to achieve.
“Every American should be concerned with an eroding system of checks and balances,” he said. “Regardless of one’s political beliefs, an overpowered executive branch is a threat to individual liberty and democratic values.”
