UNION COUNTY — A jailer with the Union County Jail is himself in jail for allegedly assaulting a female inmate during an altercation in May.

In a statement released this afternoon, Sheriff David Taylor announced that Ronald Wesley Pruitt, 38, has been charged by SLED with assault and battery third-degree.

Taylor said the charge stems from a May 31 altercation at the jail between Pruitt and a female inmate. During the altercation, Taylor said Pruitt pushed the inmate up against the wall causing a laceration to her head that required stitches.

After reviewing the video of the incident, Taylor said he contacted SLED to conduct the investigation.

SLED also issued a press release announcing Pruitt’s arrest, stating that assault and battery third-degree is “a misdemeanor with a penalty upon conviction of up to 30 days in jail, a fine of up to $500 or both.” It further stated that the case will be prosecuted by the Sixteenth Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

The warrant for Pruitt’s arrest was issued earlier today and he was taken into custody and booked at the Union County Jail where, according to Taylor, he remained awaiting a bond hearing before a magistrate.
