PIEDMONT — The Easley Green Wave ended a four-game losing skid Oct. 16 in a defensive struggle with Woodmont (2-6, 0-4), ruining the Wildcats homecoming in the process by a final of 13-7.
It should come as no surprise that under first year head coach John Windham, a former collegiate defensive coordinator, the Easley defense would at some point this season face down a comeback attempt, which is just what happened in the second half of the low scoring affair.
For Easley, it could be just what the Green Wave needs at this point in the season.
Easley (4-4, 1-3) would score first, taking the opening drive and finding paydirt on the feet of Will Drawdy who dashed into the endzone from six yards out, and with a missed PAT, posted a 6-0 lead. As was the case with the rest of the game, first quarter scoring was sparse, but Woodmont would respond in the second as QB Hunter King found Jaquan Williams for a 37-yard TD and a halftime lead of 7-6.
Easley would strike back in the third. QB Dalton Black, following a second quarter interception, would redeem himself in a big way in the third quarter, hitting Bralan Fuller for a 56-yard TD and a 13-7 lead. That would be enough for the Green Wave to escape with a win, though the Easley defense would have to withstand a comeback by the Wildcats.
Late in the final quarter, Woodmont showed sparks of life on offense and mounted a drive to take the lead. With :27 on the clock, King would drop back in the pocket and put the ball in the air only to have the comeback bid spoiled by Ivan Hill of the Easley secondary as he picked off the pass and sealed the win.
