EASLEY — In the opening game of the Big League World Series, Panama defeated the Netherlands 7-4.
The Netherlands led 3-2 going into the seventh inning, but Panama hammered in five runs to take control of the game.
Panama struck first in the game, scoring two runs in the top of the second inning. Elio Beitia drew a base on balls, then Manuel Salazar reached on a fielder’s choice play. Alejandro Rodriquez reached base, then Leonardo Burgos cleared the bases with a triple.
The Netherlands answered with one run in the bottom of the second inning. Urving Kemp walked, then moved to third base off a single by Milan Post. Jimmy Froberg drove Kemp in with a single.
The Netherlands tied the game in the bottom of the third when Stephen tripled, then scored on a throwing error.
The Netherlands took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rossini Frolijk singled, then moved to second when Jillian Cijntje was hit by a pitch. Frolijk moved to third on an error, then scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Urving Kemp.
Then came the disastrous top of the seventh.
Luis Orgeta opened the inning with a single for Panama. Ortega moved to second when Joseph Flores reached on an error. Ortega then moved to third and scored on another error. Flores advanced to third base. Leonardo Burgos walked, then Noel Garcia singled, scoring Flores from third and moving Burgos to second base.
Fabio Marciaga then drove in Burgos and Garcia with a double. Marciaga advanced to third on the play. Later in the inning, Marciaga scored on a bunt by Eduardo Thomas, giving Panama a 7-3 lead with just three outs remaining in the game.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Jesse Assems drew a walk. Stephen Henson was hit by a pitch, then Rossinni Frolijk drew a walk to load the bases. Jillian Cijntje then singled, scoring Assems from third. But the Netherland rally ended with a fielder’s choice play for the final out.
Panama faces Canada 7:30 p.m.Thursday.
The Netherlands plays Canada at 4 p.m. Friday. At the same time, Panama will play Puerto Rico.
