PICKENS — Mother’s Finest, a staple along the Grand Strand for many years, will bring the Pickens Azalea Festival to a rousing conclusion with a free concert at 8 p.m. in the new amphitheater in Pickens.
The Pickens Azalea Festival begins Friday and runs through Saturday night in Pickens.
The concert will give music lovers an opportunity to not only hear the familiar sounds of the band but new material from the group’s first studio recordings in 15 years, a CD titled Mother’s Finest Presents: Goodie 2Shooz & the Filthy Beast.
Backup lead singer Glenn Murdock said the band is excited about getting out of the studio and out on the road again.
“This is our first gig out of the studio since we started working on the new CD,” he said. “We haven’t recorded a new CD in fifteen years and we have a little more mixing, album cover design, and work on the masters of the tracks. It’s going to be great to perform outdoors.”
For the longstanding fan, as well as someone new to the group’s funkadelic, horn-driven sound, the show promises to be one not to miss, according to Murdock.
“Oh, yeah, this should be a special show. We haven’t toured in a while,” he said. “Being in the studio is different from performing live and that’s what we love to do. We’re going to be playing some of our new songs on stage along with the favorites our fans love.”
When asked why it took so long for the group to get back in the studio, Murdock said the right deal just wasn’t there.
“The deals we had were just not right until now, so we held off until we did get something we felt was right for us,” he said. “We decided to go into the studio on our own for the first time and self-produced this CD. It took a little longer than we expected, technology advancing the way it has.”
What can fans expect from the new Mother’s Finest material?
“We had an artistic vision heading in to record,” Murdock said. “It shows in the music coming out the other end.”
The band will also have available an opportunity for fans to preorder the upcoming release at the show.
